Pierre Boulez (1925-2016): Sonatine for Flute and Piano
Taught by Olivier Messiaen at the Conservatoire de Paris, Pierre Boulez was leading in French avant-garde music. The Sonatine is in serialism, written in 1946, when Boulez was only twenty years old. It was inspired by the structure of Arnold Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1, which shows a continuous transformation of a single theme over four movements. The tone row could be inverted, fragmented, or even passing between the performers through long trills! Due to complicated rhythms, varied meter, scattered pitches and register, it is a formidable challenge for the flautist, pianist, as well as the audience. Yet, it’s lyricism and excitement are undeniable.
Flute: Karen Wong
Piano: Jonathan Musgrave
Live performance on 30th May, 2023 at Milton Court Concert Hall, London.
