In 1958, one of the strangest experimental automobiles ever built appeared in the United States — the Sir Vival. At first glance, it looked like two different vehicles fused together. The front housed the engine and steering system, while the passenger cabin sat in a separate rear section. But the most shocking feature was the driver’s position: seated high above the vehicle in a glass observation turret.
The car was created by American engineer Walter C. Jerome, who believed traditional car designs were dangerously flawed. In most cars of the era, the engine sat directly in front of the passengers, meaning a serious crash could push the engine straight into the cabin. Jerome’s solution was radical — separate the engine from the passenger compartment with an articulated joint that allowed the vehicle to bend in the middle.
To build his experimental machine, Jerome modified a chassis from the Hudson Commodore, equipping the car with a smooth-running Hudson straight-eight engine producing about 128 horsepower. But performance was never the main goal. The Sir Vival was designed around safety decades before modern crash engineering existed.
The vehicle featured seat belts, padded interior surfaces, rollover protection concepts, and a raised driving position intended to improve visibility and prevent accidents. Many of these ideas would not become common in production cars until many years later.
When the Sir Vival debuted in 1958, it gained national attention and even appeared on the cover of Mechanix Illustrated. However, the public reaction was mixed. Some admired its innovative safety concepts, while others couldn’t get past its bizarre appearance.
Although it never entered production, the Sir Vival remains one of the most fascinating automotive experiments ever created — a strange-looking machine that tried to rethink how cars protect their occupants.
More than sixty years later, it still stands as a reminder that sometimes the boldest ideas in engineering begin with designs that seem almost impossible.
