Savanna Greywind was born on August 9, 1995, in Burke County, North Dakota, to a family with a mix of cultural backgrounds. Her father is of European American descent, while her mother is a member of the Spirit Lake Sue Indian tribe. Savanna had two brothers: Joy and Casey, and a younger sister, Kayla. Her parents, Norberta and Joe, were proud of their children. The family lived in Fargo, North Dakota, until Savanna was 9 years old, then in 2005 they moved to Spirit Lake reservation.

Savanna loves nature and animals, especially horses. It was on the reservation that she met her partner, Ashton Matheny, when she was 15 years old. they remained together as they grew older. When it was time for college, the family moved back to Fargo. Savanna found work caring for the elderly at a nursing home, she studied to become a nurse and is preparing to take her exams in September. She was expecting her first child and was excited to start her life with Ashton. they had found an apartment and planned to move in together in early September.

However, at the time of her pregnancy, Savanna was staying with her parents on the bottom floor of a 7 unit three story apartment building. The building was also home to Brooke Crews , a 38 years old woman, and her partner, William Hoehn, who rented an apartment on the third floor. Brooke's life was deeply affected by a past marked by hardship and complexity. The experiences turned her into a dark and emotionally disturbed person. Brooke had trouble managing her emotions and behaviors, often feeling anxious and angry.
