She became known as the ‘Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island’
She was the last surviving member of her tribe, the Nicoleno, a 10,000 year old tribe of peoples on the island, no one could understand her language.
She spoke an ancient Chumash language and dialect unique to the island.
She was dressed in a skirt made of greenish cormorant feathers
Juana Maria was taken to the Santa Barbara Mission, Franciscan rules.
she was reportedly fascinated and ecstatic upon arrival, marvelling at the sight of horses an other land animals.
