Ryan Burr from Sennheiser introduces Spectra, an advanced wideband multi-channel audio system designed to enhance digital RF performance. Unlike traditional systems that use a 200 kHz carrier, Spectra operates on an 8 MHz carrier, allowing for significantly higher data capacity, improved audio quality, and increased channel counts. By leveraging a TDMA architecture, the system can support up to 64 bidirectional audio links, with flexible configurations for latency and resolution, ranging from 48 kHz to 96 kHz at 24-bit PCM audio. This adaptability makes it ideal for a variety of applications, including in-ear monitoring, instrument connections, and broadcast scenarios.
The hardware includes an innovative antenna with a built-in transceiver, eliminating the need for coaxial cables and signal boosters. Instead, the system relies on standard network cabling, with the potential for fiber connections extending up to 4 km. The direct point-to-point architecture ensures minimal latency, crucial for professional audio environments. Users can deploy up to four antennas per base station, configuring each for different frequency ranges or continuous spectrum scanning.
Spectra's software control is accessible through both a dedicated app and a browser-based interface, providing real-time monitoring and adjustments. The system also features Cascade ports, which offer future expansion possibilities based on market demand. Integrated with Dante primary and secondary connections, the unit supports modular card slots for potential future compatibility with AVB or AES67 standards.
Designed for scalability, Spectra is particularly beneficial for large-scale events and broadcast studios. Its ability to manage multiple audio streams within a single 1U rack unit reduces hardware requirements while maintaining high performance. This centralized approach simplifies operations, allowing engineers to dynamically allocate audio resources across different venues or studios.
