In the year 1600, the British East India Company was granted a royal charter by Queen Elizabeth I to trade with the East. By 1608, the first British ship arrived at Surat, a major Mughal port on the western coast of India. Initially, the British came as traders, seeking spices, textiles, and precious goods.
They negotiated with the Mughal Empire for trading rights, eventually establishing their first factory (trading post) in 1613. Over time, their role shifted from commerce to control — exploiting internal conflicts, building forts, maintaining private armies, and interfering in Indian politics.
What began as trade… slowly turned into colonization.
