American vs. European Doberman: Which Is Best For You?

The modern American Doberman Pinscher originated in Germany as a personal protector for individuals and families, and for police and military work. Thanks to Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann. In the us, Doberman are predominantly used as family dogs, show (conformation) dogs, and obedience dogs. Their previous view for being aggressive, dangerous dogs has slowly been fading away these past few years. The American Doberman Pinscher is now known to be gentle, loving, and sensitive.

American Doberman: This dog is bred mainly for AKC Confirmation shows. While some might use them as protection animals, they are not as powerful as their friends back in Europe. The European tends to be 5-10 pounds heavier. The American Dobies are smaller in size and have a sleek look about them that makes them perfect for the show ring. If you are looking to win trophies and awards in the United States, then this is the dog for you.

European Doberman: This dog is bred with the sole purpose of work in mind. WORK WORK WORK! They are are larger in size and muscle tone. They have a higher drive and lots of stamina. If you are looking for a dog that will protect your home this is probably the one for you. While they are not as sleek as their American counterparts, they are not bred for show.

Now that you know a little more about each of these dogs, it’s up to you to decide which one is right for you. But no matter which one you favor, both of these lovely dogs have unlimited loyalty and love to give you. While one might be better at certain things than the other, each one is a really good dog to have apart of your life. There is plenty of room in the spotlight for both of these animals and I am sure that they will continue to shine for many years to come.
