Kouri Richins Trial Day 5: The Fentanyl Source Says It Wasn't Fentanyl

Day 5 of the Kouri Richins murder trial closed out Week 1 with testimony that fractured the prosecution's drug supply narrative from the inside.

Crozier took the stand with three separate immunity deals and contradicted key witness Carmen Lauber on nearly every material point. He said he met her once, maybe twice — not three times. He sold her oxycodone from sources with prescriptions, not fentanyl. He pointed out factual errors in his own affidavit and told the jury the language wasn't his. When asked if Carmen ever requested the "Michael Jackson stuff," he'd never heard the phrase.

Lauber herself spent the morning under continued cross-examination, admitting her story changed from three drug purchases to four, that investigators explained events to her rather than the reverse, and that Kouri Richins never explicitly asked her for fentanyl. She confirmed lying to investigators about her drug use and communicating with co-witness Nick Bonsavage under circumstances the defense says violated her probation.

Anna Isbell testified she heard Kouri ask about the "Michael Jackson drug" and thought it was a muscle relaxer. Defense attorneys showed texts where a detective threatened Isbell with a warrant and a catch pole for her dog. A digital forensics analyst testified about extracting data from four cell phones, including one that required physical repair. An undercover narcotics officer testified with cameras ordered off.

The week ended with a denied mistrial motion and a jury that's seen the prosecution's science — but also watched its witnesses undermine the story of how fentanyl allegedly got to Kouri Richins. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
