-Worried about memory loss in an older adult? In this talk, clinicians and caregivers from Singapore explain how to assess memory problems, navigate diagnosis (MMSE/MoCA, labs, brain scans), manage dementia symptoms, and build a support network for long-term care at home or in the community.
What you’ll learn:
-When memory changes mean more than ageing—and what to check first (treatable causes like depression, delirium, thyroid, B12/folate)
-How doctors assess cognition and function (MMSE, MoCA, ADLs/IADLs), mood/behaviour, safety, and risks
CT/MRI/PET: What scans can (and can’t) tell you about Alzheimer’s, Lewy body, FTD, and vascular dementia
-Medications overview: donepezil, rivastigmine, memantine; careful use of meds for agitation, sleep, hallucinations
-Where to seek help in Singapore: Polyclinics/GPs, memory clinics, AIC, Dementia Singapore, day care, PT/OT
-Real caregiver stories: home care with helpers, family dynamics, burnout prevention, culturally tailored community programmes (e.g., Age Well Everyday)
-Prevention and living well: activity, social engagement, diet patterns linked to brain health (e.g., turmeric/curcumin, mushrooms, fermented foods)
This webinar was held on 28 January 2025, organised by the Yeo Boon Khim Mind Science Centre, and made possible through the generous support of Emeritus Professor Hong Hai.
