Our stop in La Romana, Dominican Republic, was a perfect example. We had three days to immerse ourselves in the local culture. We started with a somewhat typical tourist experience, visiting a remarkable natural site on the island. But thanks to the new friends we made on the ship, we were able to go beyond the surface. Our friends connected us with a local guide who took us on a personal tour of his neighborhood, introduced us to his family, and even cooked us a traditional Dominican lunch in his home.
