🍄 Edible Wood Decomposing Mushrooms | Summer Mushroom Foraging in Southern Indiana 🍄
Join me on another Mushroom Journey as we wrap up the summer mushroom series with a completely different category of fungi — wood-decomposing mushrooms. In this mid-August foraging adventure through southern Indiana forests, we search for some of the most fascinating and delicious mushrooms growing directly on logs, stumps, and fallen trees.
After a hot and rainy summer with record heat and heavy moisture, the woods are alive with fungi. This episode focuses on edible wood decomposers, including oyster mushrooms, chicken of the woods, jelly fungi, and giant polypores — along with identification tips, harvesting advice, habitat clues, and safety considerations for beginner and intermediate foragers. A look at various types of wood decomposing (saprobic) mushrooms found in Southern Indiana in the summertime emphasizing the edible varieties.
