STORYLINE:
Trucks full of aid supplies and blankets entered the Gaza Strip via the Rafah crossing with Egypt on Wednesday, heading to Kerem Shalom crossing for Israeli inspection, where they will wait to be allowed into the strip.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that Israel will reopen Gaza’s border crossing with Egypt in both directions, allowing Palestinians to enter and leave the territory after nearly two years of closure.
Netanyahu did not say when the crossing in Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah, would open, but did say it would be limited to foot traffic and not be used for cargo, adding Israel won’t “prevent anyone from leaving.”
Palestinians in Gaza see Rafah border crossing as their link to the world, their only way out of the devastated territory. But since Israel seized the crossing May 2024, it's been largely shut.
Now, as the ceasefire progresses, Netanyahu has said he will reopen the crossing for Palestinian travel in and out of the territory.
That has raised hoped that tens of thousands of Palestinians in need of medical care only available outside Gaza will finally be able to get it, and the tens of thousands who left the enclave during the war can return home.
