On March 2, 2026, the Terrace Bay Council met to discuss a range of community initiatives, from major grant successes to disappointing news regarding local recreation. The meeting opened with an acknowledgment of the Robinson Superior Treaty territory.
Student representative Marley McGrath shared a heartwarming report on recent school activities. Students celebrated Pink Shirt Day to stand against bullying and participated in a "Smile Cookie" fundraiser that benefited Ronald McDonald House Canada. On the court and ice, local athletes excelled: both junior and senior boys' basketball teams brought home banners after undefeated tournaments, while the boys' curling team also secured a first-place finish.
Council addressed the ongoing need for medical professionals by agreeing to increase the doctor recruitment fund. Terrace Bay will double its contribution to match neighbouring communities and stay competitive in attracting physicians.
In a move to protect homeowners, Council approved an agreement with Service Line Warranty of Canada. This optional program allows residents to pay a monthly fee for insurance covering repairs to private water and sewer lines, which are often not covered by standard home insurance.
The town received excellent news regarding economic growth. FedNor has awarded Terrace Bay funding to hire a dedicated Economic Development Officer. Additionally, the arena will see significant upgrades, including a new dehumidifier and LED lighting, largely funded by the NOHFC. Council also accepted provincial funding to develop a Community Improvement Plan focused on revitalizing the downtown core.
The most disappointing news of the evening was the confirmed closure of Trestle Ridge Ski Hill for the 2026 season. A "catastrophic" mechanical failure in the lift’s bearing was discovered early in the season. Because the repair requires specialized mechanics and the snow to clear, work cannot begin until spring.
The meeting concluded with a move into an "in camera" session to discuss private negotiations regarding capital funding and utility buildings.
