What Is “Creaky Fascia”? Understanding Fascial Hydration and Ground SubstanceYes — fascia can “creak.”Clients are often surprised when, during a session, a limb is held in a sustained position and the tissue responds with subtle creaking sensations. It may feel like a slow, sticky shift — pause — then another small release. What is happening?Creaky fascia is often associated with decreased hydration in the ground substance of the fascial system. The ground substance — which contains hyaluronic acid and structured water — allows fascial layers to glide smoothly over one another. When hydration is insufficient, glide decreases and resistance increases. That resistance can sometimes be perceived as a creaking or sticky sensation during manual work.Improving hydration of the ground substance can support fascial mobility. Two simple approaches often recommended:1. Internal hydrationHydrate consistently throughout the day. Citrus-infused water (for example, lightly crushed lemon or orange in water) is commonly used because citrus may support structured water formation and connective tissue health.2. Topical supportSome practitioners observe clinical improvements in fascial glide when small amounts of organic extra virgin olive oil are applied topically. While there is currently no research confirming dermal absorption into fascia for this purpose, some clinicians report improved tissue pliability in practice. It is important to note:• Research supports the anti-inflammatory properties of extra virgin olive oil when ingested.• There is no direct evidence confirming topical application hydrates fascia at the ground substance level. However, adequate hydration overall — internally and systemically — remains foundational for connective tissue health. If fascia is well hydrated, it glides. If hydration is limited, it resists.Creaking is often a sign the tissue may benefit from improved hydration and gentle, sustained work.
