Melody
by Myloslav Skoryk 1938-2020
Myloslav Skoryk was born in the Ukraine in 1938. His father was a historian and his mother a chemist. At the age of 7, he was admitted into the Lviv Music School. At 9, he and his family, along with hundreds of thousand of other Ukrainians, were deported to Siberia with only what they could carry. They were not permitted to return home until 1955.
Myloslav was then admitted into the Lviv Conservatory of Music as a piano and composition major. In 1960, he studied with Dmitri Kabalevsky at the Moscow Conservatory. He went on to teach composition at Kyiv Conservatory, conduct the Kyiv Opera and be Ukraine’s best known composer.
He has been named the People’s Artist of Ukraine.
Melody comes from his score for the 1981 movie “The High Pass”. The story recounts the travails after World War II when a peasant family in the Carpathian Mountains attempts to reunite. The mother, Yaroslava Petrin is a devoted communist and her husband, son and daughter are supporters of the militant Ukrainian Independence Movement.
