Martin Daubney moderates a heated exchange between Rob Bates, Research Director at the Centre for Migration Control, and Jonathan Portes, Professor of Economics and Public Policy at King’s College London.
Bates cites fresh DWP figures showing 1.3 million foreign nationals are claiming Universal Credit – a bill of up to £15 billion a year for the British taxpayer. He says this proves the UK’s mass migration system is unsustainable and skewed towards low-skilled, low-wage arrivals.
Portes disputes this, insisting migrants are more likely to be in work, have higher salaries, and claim fewer benefits than Britons – accusing Bates of misleading the public and “comparing apples and pears.”
The two clash over unemployment rates, the EU Settlement Scheme, Brexit, and whether foreign nationals who don’t contribute should be allowed to stay.
