Picking the right method to teach children to read is crucial. Children's reading foundation will determine their reading success in the future, as indepedent readers. How strong this foundation is will depend very much upon whether the child has learnt to read using the whole word approach or the phonics approach.
In short, the whole word (or whole language) method relies on sight words, and the child's memory to learn lists of sight words. On the other hand, the phonics approach is based around the concept of phonemic awareness, which is the ability to identify the different individual sounds that makeup words.
