Ben Williams is an American jazz bassist from Washington, D.C., widely regarded as one of the leading voices of his generation. He began playing bass at the age of ten and went on to study at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, later earning a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Michigan State University and a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from the Juilliard School.

His career took a major leap forward in 2009, when he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition, judged by legendary bassists such as Ron Carter, Charlie Haden, Dave Holland, and Christian McBride. This achievement brought him international recognition and led to his first recording contract.

Williams has since collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Pat Metheny, George Benson, Stefon Harris, Robert Glasper, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, and Wynton Marsalis. His playing is known for blending the depth of jazz tradition with contemporary influences from R&B, hip-hop, and gospel, making his sound both versatile and modern.

He has been named a Rising Star for Bass in DownBeat Magazine’s Critics Poll and has released solo albums that showcase his ability to move seamlessly between genres while maintaining a strong jazz foundation.
