Nicola Gobbo, one of Victoria's most controversial legal figures, has spoken publicly for the first time in years to give evidence in her civil lawsuit against the State of Victoria.
The former barrister, once known as Informer 3838 or Lawyer X, gave information about her high-profile clients to police during Melbourne's infamous gangland wars, triggering a major scandal and potentially tainting dozens of criminal convictions.
She is now suing the state, arguing Victoria Police officers acted negligently when they enlisted her as an informer, an arrangement that has caused ongoing mental and physical trauma.
The state is defending the case, arguing it cannot be held responsible.
Ms Gobbo appeared via a video link on Wednesday, with only the judge and a few lawyers able to see her face.
