Dec. 11th Miranda Rondeau, Paula Bickham and Farrunnissa Rosa
surprised Barbara Gail of DrumRise The Art of Women's Drumming with a passing on of a gift.
in 2008 Layne Redmond was recognized to receive the
Drum Ma Award created by Ubaka Hill
for women drummers who were pioneers in the world of percussion. The physical delivery
didn't happen until 2013 through Barbara L Pitcher and Amy Oaks.
The Drum Ma Award is an iron statuette of a woman with a carve out of a djembe and frame drum in her body.
The words carved on one side reads
"Ubaka Hill Museum and Archives of Women's Drumming Traditions" and the other side it reads
"Woman is a Drum presented to Layne Redmond 2008.
*******************
There's been a tradition to pass it on to those that continue to keep Layne's work, name and legacy alive and to pass it on to the next one to receive it.
Farrunnissa Rosa received it from Layne Redmond who wanted it to be shared in the community.
Farrunnissa Rosa a legacy keeper who has been teaching Layne Redmond's and Tommy Be Giving Birth To Ourselves as well as other material of Layne, held it for awhile and passed it on to Paula Bickham who then
passed it on to Miranda Rondeau in 2019 after she did a ritual for Layne's birthday spreading Layne's ashes in The New River in Thurman with the Drum Ma present.
Paula Bickham a legacy holder surprised Miranda Rondeau and sent the Drum Ma Award to her.
It's been part of many of Miranda Rondeau's drum workshops, classes and circles.
Oct. 28th 2023 the 10th anniversary of Layne Redmond's crossing the
Drum Ma was part of the her altar for her Fall Frame Drum Immersion dedicated to Layne.
Miranda Rondeau, has now passed this Drum Ma to
Barbara Gail with the help of Paula Bickman and Farrunnissa Rosa on Dec 11th 2023.
Barbara Gail is a legacy holder of Layne Redmond's work with consistent devotion, dedication, in offering workshops in person, online and through the epic resource she created through her youtube channel / @barbaragail_drum_song_dance
and the Path of the Tambourine.

From Miranda Rondeau
" Barbara Gail shares the mission of the importance of visibility for Layne's work and women's frame drumming.
Barbara Gail has been a warm welcoming presence in the
Women Frame Drumming group that I created which
is dedicated to Layne Redmond with her blessing.
Barbara encourages, praises and brings a sense of
community to our group these last couple years.
She's been a bridge builder, creating community, connecting with other women frame drummers and upcoming new women frame drummers.
She is seen as a mentor globally.
She's done beautiful work in the past with her group Moonrise Daughters of a Sacred Pulse offering ritual drumming as inspired through Layne's ritual drumming work.
She's been a wonderful guest speaker for many interviews and panels bringing forward Layne Redmond's work, highlighting the frame drum, the tambourine and the significance of rhythm in these times.
She honored Layne in 2021 celebrating Layne Redmond's induction into the PASIC Hall of Fame
through offering a Tambourine workshop and processional at PASIC.
I have a deep appreciation to be on this rhythmic journey with Barbara Gail and honored to
recognize her and all her work, efforts, knowledge and rhythmic wisdom being passed on in honor of our beloved late teacher Layne Redmond.
Honored to pass on the Drum Ma Award to Barbara Gail,
to hold for a time, in recognition of your honoring of Layne Redmond.
Thank you for carrying this modern tradition inspired by the ancients and by the work of Layne Redmond's."
