I spent 24 hours in Hakone, Japan enjoying the onsens (hot springs) and exploring the Owakudani volcano, the Heiwa Tori gate, and the sights around Lake Ashi. I even caught a glimpse of Mt Fuji when the clouds cleared! It's so beautiful in Hakone with the leaves changing color and being surrounded by mountains.
Hakone is an easy trip from either Tokyo or Kyoto via the Shinkansen (high speed rail) or the Romancecar from Tokyo. There area is known for onsens (hot springs) because of the Owakudani volcano, so a lot of the hotels and guesthouses have onsens you can use! The water is definitely really hot but it's so refreshing after a long day.
