In this lesson, students learn about different types of city transit. They learn and review vocabulary related to transit and read a transportation pamphlet to find information.

Vocabulary:

To give power or rights to - Authorize
“A manager must authorize the transaction before we can give the customer the money.”

To lower the price - Discount
"Many stores will offer a discount on bulk purchases"

Usual - Customary
“It was customary to wear black at a funeral.”

A person 65 or older - Senior Citizen
“Most senior citizens are retired.”

Having more than one - Multiple
“The man asked multiple times but the clerk kept forgetting.”

To let a person out of one’s car, bus, etc. - Drop Off
“Dad will drop off the kids this morning.”

To take a person into one’s car, bus, etc. as a passenger - Pick Up
“Mom will pick up the kids after school.”

The time of day when there is a lot of traffic on the road - Rush Hour
“I left the office at 4:30PM so I will most likely hit rush hour traffic.”

A piece of metal used instead of money - Token
"redeem this token for a free dessert"

To go down - Descend
“The stairs descend to the subway.”

The money a passenger on public transportation has to pay - Fare
“There is a small fare to ride the bus.”

Yellow cab with roof signs showing a phone number and will drive passengers - Taxis
“Taxis are the best way to get around in the city.”

An underground electric railroad - Subway
“It is so convenient to take the subway.”
