The ironclad "irreplaceable" stance Marvel Studios held following Chadwick Boseman's passing is officially crumbling. While Kevin Feige stated in 2020 that T'Challa "transcends iteration," and VP Nate Moore insisted in 2021 that we would "not see T'Challa in the MCU 616 Universe," the tide turned in early 2025. A January 2025 report from The Guardian revealed Marvel was now "firmly open" to the character's return, followed by Moore himself pivoting to a "never say never" stance in February 2025.
The most damning evidence emerged in March 2025, when artist Mus Grizzy posted—and quickly deleted—concept art for Avengers: Doomsday on ArtStation. The leaked images were highly specific: a man in the unmistakable "King of Wakanda" garb standing in the foreground, while a hooded figure stands before a massive panther statue on a cliffside framed by waterfalls. Fans and insiders alike have identified the figure’s likeness as English actor Damson Idris. Idris, the breakout star of Snowfall and co-star of the Brad Pitt racing epic F1, has been coy about the rumors. During a June 2025 appearance on The Today Show, he famously dodged a "yes or no" question with a response so vague it was interpreted as a functional "yes," later telling Variety at the 2026 Golden Globes that he "loves that world."
Marvel's path forward likely utilizes the "Multiverse Loophole." As established by variants in Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, a T'Challa from an alternate universe bypasses the 616-timeline finality. This has deep comic roots: in the source material, Black Panther is often the first to witness an "incursion" firsthand. This variant could debut in Doomsday before leading the third film, reportedly titled Shadows of Wakanda. While a leaked logline for the June 2026 production (filming June 15th) claims the film explores "vulnerability after T'Challa's death," veteran theorists view this as a classic Marvel smokescreen. With Denzel Washington confirming that "Ryan Coogler is writing a part" for him, the "Shadows" title likely refers to a new King emerging from the chaos of a collapsing Multiverse.
