Parent PLUS Loans vs Private Student Loans
------------------------------------------------

When it comes to paying for college, a lot of families quickly find themselves overwhelmed by all the options. That was definitely the case for a close friend of mine when her eldest started applying to schools, and it’s what got us both digging into the differences between Parent PLUS Loans and Private Student Loans. Parent PLUS Loans are federal loans taken out by parents of undergrads and can cover up to the full cost of attendance after other aid is applied.

They come with a fixed interest rate (currently 9.08%) and flexible repayment options like standard or graduated plans, and you can defer payments until after your child graduates. However, they do require a credit check, come with a loan fee, and don’t include income-driven repayment or loan forgiveness programs, which makes it important to seriously consider how you’ll manage repayments down the line.

------------------------------------------------
College Ave - Fast, Flexible & Student-Friendly
------------------------------------------------

If you’re looking for a private loan with flexibility, College Ave is a great place to start. They make the process super easy with an online prequalification that doesn’t affect your credit score, so you can view your offers without pressure. Loans start as low as $1,000 and go all the way up to your school-certified cost of attendance, and they also offer refinancing if you already have student debt. College Ave offers both fixed and variable interest rates, starting at 3.47% and 4.44% respectively, and lets you customize repayment plans to suit your budget.

You can choose to start repaying while in school (which helps reduce long-term costs), pay interest only, or defer completely. However, it’s important to note that while their starting rates are low, their maximum APR can reach up to 17.99%, making it essential to compare options before committing. Still, their overall transparency and student-first approach makes them one of the most popular private lenders today.

------------------------------------------------
Sallie Mae - Well-Known Name, Lower Max Rates
------------------------------------------------

Sallie Mae is another big name in private student loans and offers solid options for undergraduate, graduate, and even part-time or international students. Unlike College Ave, they don’t offer a prequalification process, so applying will show up on your credit report—which is something to consider. Sallie Mae offers loans from $1,000 up to the full cost of attendance and works directly with schools to verify eligibility.

Their fixed rates for undergrad loans start at 3.49% and cap at 15.99%, while variable rates range from 4.54% to 14.71%—making their maximum rates a bit lower than College Ave’s. Repayment options are similar, including interest-only, $25/month flat payments, or deferred plans while in school. But compared to College Ave, Sallie Mae offers fewer term options, and while you don’t need a cosigner, having one with good credit could get you better rates. Overall, it’s a good option if you’re prioritizing lower max rates and a reliable lender with decades of experience.
