Restoration On ‘65 Ford H1000 Cabover Full Tour Interview

Описание: Four years ago when I began my channel, I grabbed my new GoPro camera and drove to a remote trailer drop yard where I knew a gem sat baking in the sun. I didn’t know much about this truck but I did know it was rare and had a beautiful patina.

It was a 1965 Ford H1000 cabover commonly called a “Two Story Falcon” (I had also heard it called “Two Story Edsel” if you know the parallels of the Edsel company and the short production run of the H1000s.) Based on the cab and chassis of the C series trucks that Ford was already producing, the engineers decided to raise them up and fill the wheel openings and grille openings with fiberglass panels. A fiberglass sleeper was also attached and the medium duty truck was now getting into the heavy duty realm equipped with S-cam air brakes and heavier suspensions, but short wheel bases to meet length laws and bridging laws at the time.

This particular light blue H1000 was bought new by Don Michaletz in 1965 and driven by him and his son Pete. It’s got a gasoline 538ci Super Duty engine and was originally equipped with twin stick 5 & 4 speed transmissions. (It currently has a ten speed between the frame rails).

Spending most of it’s early life running to Texas and back, the single axle pulled trailers of engine parts South and produce North. Later in life, the trusty workhorse pulled a car trailer loaded with junk cars and stayed in central Minnesota before being parked in 1984.

And there the truck sat facing South in a lonely corner of the lot for decades and decades. Now a home for critters, sun beating down on it’s already faded paint and leaving only shadows of it’s former career visible.

And that’s where many, many machine’ stories end; with an owner that plans to “someday” pull it into the shop and fix it up. But not this truck. It’s earned a special place in the hearts of Don, Pete, and our video’s guest, Ron Heim. They hooked on a chain to the hitch and one exciting winter day in early 2026 the next chapter of this truck’s life began.

Ron is a longtime employee and friend of Michaletz Trucking, and no stranger to vintage truck restoration; particularly Mack trucks and cabovers. In this full tour Walkaround video, Ron takes us through the VERY early stages of the restoration process and tells the stories behind the Two Story Falcon, it’s idiosyncrasies and uniqueness. He patiently answers my questions and explains the plans for the project that will likely take him years.

I’m thrilled to say that I’ve been invited to come by periodically and make progress videos and document the process. It will be tedious work as the engine gets rebuilt, the frame sandblasted and painted; every repair and installation done to put this classic piece of history back to how it was new from the plant in Louisville back in ‘65.
