Today's revolutionaries get degrees in computer science. That's where the revolution is at. There's almost not an area of life or society or the economy or science that is not being impacted by, by computer science. So if you want to, if you want to have a lot of impact today, you know, my advice to you is, you know, get a degree in computer science.
[Hank]
We are one of the best computer science departments in the country. We're certainly ranked in the top 10 and have been for many years.
[Pedro]
We cover the whole spectrum of computer science from, you know, operating systems and algorithms to things like, you know, artificial intelligence, machine learning, databases, graphics.
[Steph]
It's not really a thesis-based program. It's more of a topic-based class program. So, you have to take eight, four-credit classes, and you can pick any classes that are offered.
[Alan]
And the classes are all self-contained, so you take it and you'll get what you need to be successful in that class.
[Steph]
I was able to work full time easily while taking these classes. They're one day a week for three hours, from 6:30 to 9:30 at night.
[Hank]
We want people who have worked and who have seen what it's like to produce products in the field, seen the kind of environments that exist, seen the kind of problems that exist in the working world.
[Pedro]
So in a way, you know, the classes are much more interesting because people share their experiences and they bring up, you know, what they're interested in and what not. So it makes it all quite rich.
[Hank]
Our faculty are all among the very top experts in the world in their particular fields, whether it's operating systems or machine learning or human-computer interaction or biological computing or whatever it is.
[Pedro]
We're in the fortunate position that because we are one of the top departments we can be very, very selective. We have this rule that we only hire people who are better than we are. That way we keep getting better.
[Hank]
Seattle's an incredible place to be, and it's the center of several different ecosystems.
[Pedro]
To start with, you have companies like Amazon and Microsoft that are headquartered here, but you know, many of the others also have labs here. Like Google has two labs here. Facebook has a lab. Alibaba recently opened a lab. And then we have a very large ecosystem of startups.
[Alan]
Oh, I think this is the place to be as an engineer, especially as a software engineer. Everybody's here. Every kind of work that you could possibly do in the field is done here.
[Steph]
Through the program, I've met a ton of, actually, great friends that work at different companies in the Seattle area. I have friends from Google now, from Zillow, from small startups that I wouldn't have even heard of if I hadn't met them through this program, and we actually still get together quite frequently.
[Alan]
You can just do anything with this. You want to go work on spaceships? You can be a software engineer and go work on spaceships. You know, you want to go change the world by putting a computer on every desktop and in every home? You can go be a software engineer and do that.
