STORYLINE:
The Sony Corporation on Tuesday unveiled its latest human-shaped robot, the SDR-4X, which can remember people's faces, dance disco steps and even sing in harmony.
The Tokyo electronics and entertainment giant said the robot - which is set to go on sale later this year - will cost as much as a luxury car, but refused to say any more about pricing or sales plans.
Sony says the robot is designed to live in homes.
It has been given sensors on the bottom of its feet to walk on uneven surfaces such as carpeting - and it even knows how to tumble without falling apart and get back up on its own.
The 58-centimetre (23-inch) tall robot has two cameras to see things better and can tell the difference between the edge of a table and the patterns on the floor - a challenge for Sony's puppy-shaped Aibo which has only one camera.
The SDR-4X knows about 60-thousand words, can hold simple conversations and be programmed to sing by inputting music and lyrics.
The robot can be programmed to recognise 10 people through their faces, stored as digital images shot with its camera, as well as through their voices picked up through seven microphones.
It will also remember their names.
Sony is just one of several Japanese companies beefing up robot divisions recently.
