Notice that Teacher Jen uses many function carrier phrases such as "I want ___" and "Let's ___". These help a child meet their needs by expressing what they want (and don't want!), as well as learning early social skills by using "My Turn" and "Your Turn"
You can practice with your child by modeling these same phrases with their favourite items, lego, iPad, cars, etc. You can increase practice by just giving things one at a time, or for iPad, pausing it periodically so they can ask for more.
Give lots of praise for talking! "Wow, good job asking for more lego!"
You can also echo back what they said and add a word. For example, if they say "I want car!" you can repeat "You want the car? Want the red car?" etc.

This video features some important language like "Ow, I hurt my..." and naming the injured body part. This is particularly helpful if children struggle to identify when they're hurt.
Learning to express when you're hurt is done in an interesting and engaging way such that it's memorable for little minds!

Teacher Jen works with a variety of neurodivergent children with autism, ADHD, and speech delays. Many of them have needed help using functional phrases to help make their needs met and reduce frustration. Teacher Jen also has a toddler who is using sentences and eager to learn more, so she created this video to help model useful sentences for kids to copy. She demonstrates a situation where one would use the language rather than just saying phrases in a vacuum, which helps toddlers better understand where and when to use the phrases!

This video may be helpful for children with speech delays, but if your child has a speech delay, this is not a replacement for in-person services and intervention.
