The museum of the 21st century is no longer a vault of objects, but a system of information. Artifacts become data : indexed, tagged, and continuously recombined. The curatorial act shifts from selection to computation. In the traditional museum, knowledge was stabilised through physical collection.
A proof of possession and order. In the Database Museum, knowledge exists as metadata, endlessly retrievable yet placeless. What we inherit is not the object itself, but its algorithmic shadow. A memory sustained by systems of access rather than walls. The museum has always represented the world through objects and images. But as digital technology advances, representation transforms into reconstruction. We no longer look at reality. We rebuild it, re-render it, and inhabit it. Architecture becomes the spatial interface of this transformation. Advances in volumetric imaging, light-field capture, and neural rendering redefine how the museum constructs knowledge. Tools such as Unreal Engine, LIDAR scanning, and generative AI no longer reproduce history as image. They rebuild it as space. The museum evolves from an archive of artifacts into an active generator of experience.
