Описание: This week we continue to track the aftermath of the killing of Renee Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis on January 7. We analyze the Trump administrations siege on Minneapolis as a exemplifying the politics of retribution he promised in his 2024 campaign, not a personal vendetta per se so much as the use Federal power to exact revenge on behalf of those who justifiably conclude their interests have been sacrificed by liberal elites in urban centers like Minneapolis. I'm not sure there a single coherent policy objective here, for instance shoring up support with the mobilized minority by using what increasingly appears the President's paramilitary troop to punish those with whom he disagrees or whom dare to resist, in the hopes that their support may compensate for his loss of broader approval. Be that as it may, it appears to be backfiring, as the lawless cruelty and violence be rained down upon immigrants and citizens alike by ICE and USCBP seems to be further eroding broad based support for the president and mobilizing and emboldening the resistance, while courts are beginning to scrutinize the apparently illegal conduct the administration has licensed. Where this leads, especially if Congressional Republicans continue to shy from restraining their President, is hard to predict, as the logic of escalation holds for both sides. But we conclude today's class by thinking a little about the Declaration of Independence and its author (as we embark on a year in which we may be able to celebrate its 250th anniversary) to make it clear that the values of American democratic political culture clearly favor the protesters and not the President.
