Is Knights of the Old Republic worth playing? KotOR is free on Amazon Underground and it's definitely worth playing for a freebie.
There’s one game series which you Star Wars fans cannot stop mentioning and that’s Knights of the Old Republic. Maybe you’ve played other Star Wars games, maybe you’ve played other BioWare games. If you’re looking to pick up Knights of the Old Republic 1 for the first time, let’s just quickly go over the basics and keep this short and sweet. Hopefully this’ll be a beginners guide to Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic.
Going by the amount of comments on our Star Wars videos, KotOR is arguably the most popular Star Wars game out there. Good jb as it's in two Humble Bundles at the same time! The general consensus is that the story of the first Knights of the Old Republic is amazing, but KotOR 2 digs even deeper into the mythology, even though it was a bit rushed. It’s the first Knights of the Old Republic which gets mentioned most though, and for good reason. If you played Mass Effect or Dragon Age and want a similar RPG, it’s well worth a punt. The mobile port - which is in the mobile Humble Bundle and free on Amazon Underground - is actually wicked as well.
Knights of the Old Republic is set about 4000 years before the Original Star Wars Trilogy. So nothing which happens in this game has any relation to the modern Star Wars films. It’s a self-contained little story that’s about the Jedi from the olden times and has probably the best standalone story of any Star Wars game. Seriously, it’s brilliant. If you like narrative-heavy RPGs this is 100% for you.
Knights of the Old Republic was originally an idea from the Dark Horse comics and there’s more material out there if you like it. All this stuff is called 'Legends' now though, and it has zero relation to any of the modern Star Wars films or telly. So don’t worry about marrying it up with Kylo Ren or whatever, it’s just a fun little story that stands alone.
Like a lot of Star Wars series, KotOR was originally going to have a third game. There’s not a lot of information out there, but keep tuned for more content about KotOR III and the Knights of the Old Republic series as a whole.
The main conclusion at this time is that KotOR is cheap and/or free. Right now the mobile version is in the Humble Bundle; the Star Wars Humble Bundle 3 just went live and KotOR is in there. It’s always on sale somewhere. If you miss it this time, you can usually pick KOTOR up for a song. I grabbed my mobile version from Amazon Underground for the princely sum of FREE.
Being a standalone story makes this game worth a play in my book. The campaign is about 30hrs or so - longer if you’re a completionist so it offers a damned good return on investment. The story and the setting is honestly fantastic, you won’t regret playing it, trust me. The odds of us getting another deep RPG like this set in the Star Wars universe is pretty slim, so snap Knights of the Old Republic up while you can.
