Released in arcades in 1988 by Data East, RoboCop is an action shooter for 1 or 2 players (alternating). Based on the 1987 movie, the player becomes RoboCop in 1990 Old Detroit with the Prime Directives: Serve The Public Trust, Protect The Innocent, Uphold The Law.
The game's opening cutscene and main story are taken directly from the movie (if you’ve never seen it, Alex Murphy was a police officer killed in the line of duty but rebuilt as the all-but-invincible RoboCop). At the start of the game you can only punch enemies then, once a short distance in, you gain the ability to use the Auto 9, RoboCop's primary weapon. RoboCop will still punch enemies at close range as appropriate, and you can also jump and fire at diagonal angles. Sometimes you will also find powerups with limited ammo-a 3-way spread shot, a double laser gun which is stronger and penetrates enemies, and the Cobra Gun which obliterates anything in its path. Some areas also have jars of baby food, which restore some Power. RoboCop loses Power when hit by an enemy attack or when making contact with enemies. If Power is fully depleted, the game is over but you can continue and resume from where you were at. The enemies look like they were pulled out of prior Data East game "Heavy Barrel" (which this game borrows heavily from on the technical side) but the bosses are taken from the movie including the iconic "ED-209" robot. There are several of RoboCop's sound bites included too such as "You are under arrest" and "Your move, creep" and, when completing a stage, "Thank you for your cooperation". Notably not present, however, is perhaps the movie's most signature catchphrase-"I'd Buy That For A Dollar!" (That got saved for Williams/Midway’s “Smash TV”)
The game breaks up the action with a pair of bonus rounds taking place at the police shooting range. Doing well here not only restores power but also can extend the maximum Power gauge until you are defeated.
There are 7 stages in all, 9 if you count the bonus stages, with the final confrontation being a simple rescuing of the OCP President from Dick Jones. Once this is done, you complete the game.
Given the success of the movie in theaters, the game was a big hit and the start of a series of games, although after the first sequel it shifted to consoles for a perhaps questionable attempt at a crossover with the popular "The Terminator" franchise in the 1990s. More recently, in 2023 RoboCop returned in a new game called "RoboCop: Rogue City", an FPS which also features RPG and police work-like elements, making for a game similar to classic BioWare games like "Jade Empire" and "Mass Effect" that mix action with a lot of side stories & sometimes mundane running around to complete small tasks.
The game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System and PC in 1989 (1991 outside the US & Japan) and for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1990 (1991 in Japan).
