About FOOSA:

FOOSA—the Fresno Opera & Orchestra Summer Academy—began in the summer of 2013. Founded by Artistic Director Thomas Loewenheim and then-Executive Director Julia Copeland, FOOSA is a partnership between Fresno State and the Youth Orchestras of Fresno and has since grown into an internationally renowned music festival. This two-week summer intensive draws serious young musicians from around the world who are eager to commit to a rigorous program of orchestra rehearsals, private lessons, master classes, individual practice, and multiple performance opportunities.

At the heart of FOOSA is the FOOSA Philharmonic, a pre-professional orchestra comprised of advanced high school, college, and graduate-level musicians who rehearse and perform side by side with our world-class faculty. This unique structure provides an unparalleled musical and educational experience.

Guided by its mission—to bring the world to Fresno and Fresno to the world—FOOSA has
become one of the most respected music festivals globally. Performances take place in iconic venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the William Saroyan Theatre in Fresno, where the FOOSA Philharmonic presents some of the most challenging and ambitious symphonic repertoire at the highest level.

What also sets FOOSA apart is its emphasis on mentorship and community-building. The
festival features three distinct orchestras, and every student in the top-level program serves as a coach and role model for younger participants. This structure fosters a strong sense of
collaboration, leadership, and giving back—helping to inspire the next generation of musicians while reinforcing each student’s own learning.
