There is absolutely nothing in our shariah that tells us that we have to follow any madhab. Allah doesn't expect us to follow any particular scholar or group of scholars or a school of thought. The only one we should sincerely be following is Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Madhabs are meant to be the means and not the goal. If you are just an average Muslim, it is simple. Ask the people of knowledge what you don't know. Go to the scholar you trust and take his/her opinion.
