Everybody Turn to the left? Everybody Turn to the Right? Sometimes you just need a little help from your friend the power steering pump. The pump creates pressure in the lines for the rack and pinion. This system makes turning the wheel much easier. As a diagnostic tool, there are couple of things you may notice.
1. Lumpy steering - your steering wheel feels easy and then hard.
2. You may hear a whining noise at lock (not much unlike the sound of your hungry child (or significant other))
3. It may impossible to turn the wheel unless you are moving.
If you are experiencing any of these, consider swapping out the pump.
Make sure to check your belts too, because sometimes a worn belt can be the culprit and replacing that will save you time and money.
