In this video, Mahalo expert Gene Shaw describes Lab image mode, its advantages over RGB and CMYK modes, and demonstrates how it can be used to achieve certain image effects.
Lab Image Mode
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Lab image mode presents color in a manner that is similar to the way in which our eyes perceive it. This mode attempts to describe how the color looks rather than how the color is created.
Lab mode is pronounced L.A.B., with the L standing for Lightness and A and B representing two points on a graph. Lab was created because when printing colors on paper or when describing/creating colors on a monitor, RGB and CMYK modes are both really a set of instructions that either your monitor or a printing press then uses to reproduce a color. There is no information that describes the look of the color itself, so Lab attempts to describe exactly what the color looks like so later on we can recreate the color device independently. One advantage to describing color in this way: we have control over the luminosity and the color independent from one another.
The problem with RGB and CMYK color space is that Photoshop is taking the calculations from the color information itself. Lab mode allows you to change the color information without changing the lightness or luminosity. It also works vice versa: you can change the luminosity without changing the color information.
