Lot 42: Virginal by Baptista Cargnonus Salodij 1682, Salo, Italy

Описание: Das Virginal (false-inner-outer) von Baptista Cargnonus Salodij (Salodiensis) besticht von außen durch seine unkaschierte Patina. Das Instrument erscheint sehr roh, die Fassung ist offenbar noch original in bläulich gehalten. Es sind viele Wurmlöcher auf dem Deckel zu sehen, ebenso ein ausgefranstes Loch am rechten Rand des Deckels. Über der Klaviatur kann man die Inschrift „Baptista Cargnonus Salodij MDCLXXXII“ lesen. Bei der Restaurierung durch Bernhard von Tucher wurde äußerste Sorgfalt darauf gelegt, möglichst viel der originalen Substanz zu erhalten, jedoch eine zuverlässige Spielbarkeit zu erreichen. Die Klaviatur besitzt den Umfang C-f3 mit kurzer Oktav (C, D, E, F, G, A-f3). Aktuell ist das Instrument mit Vogelfeder bekielt.
Die c2-Länge beträgt 31,8mm, die f2-Länge beträgt 24,7mm.
Dieses Instrument hat eine außergewöhnliche Geschichte, welche auch den äußeren Zustand erklärt. Als Prof. Dr. R. Ewerhart in der Toskana auf der Suche nach neuen Exponaten für seine Sammlung ein Antiquitätengeschäft (ein, auf die Straße gestellter alter Stuhl am Straßenrand signalisierte, dass hier Antiquitäten verkauft wurden) besuchte, konnte er ein Gespräch zwischen dem Ladenbesitzer und einem Kunden mithören, bei welchem dem Geschäftsmann ein altes Klavier in einer Kiste angeboten wurde. Dieses diente als Futterkiste für die Hühner. Nach einem kurzen Gespräch wurde vereinbart, dass der Besitzer diese Futterkiste am nächsten Tag in den Antiquitätenladen bringen würde und diese von Herrn Ewerhart begutachtet werde. Die genauen Verkaufsmodalitäten sind nicht bekannt, jedenfalls fand das Virginal den Weg aus dem Hühnerstall in die Sammlung und ist 1987 von Bernhard von Tucher restauriert worden.

The virginal (false-inner-outer) by Baptista Cargnonus Salodij (Salodiensis) is striking from the outside because of its uncovered patina. The instrument appears very raw, the setting is obviously still original in bluish. There are many wormholes on the lid, as well as a frayed hole on the right edge of the lid. Above the keyboard one can read the inscription "Baptista Cargnonus Salodij MDCLXXXII". During the restoration by Bernhard von Tucher, extreme care was taken to preserve as much of the original substance as possible, but to achieve reliable playability. The keyboard has the range C-f3 with a short octave (C, D, E, F, G, A-f3). The instrument is currently played with a bird's quills.
The c2-scale is 31.8mm, the f2-scale is 24.7mm.
This instrument has an extraordinary history, which also explains its external condition. When Prof. Dr. R. Ewerhart visited an antique shop in Tuscany in search of new exhibits for his collection (an old chair placed on the side of the road signalled that antiques were being sold here), he was able to overhear a conversation between the shop owner and a customer in which the businessman was offered an old piano in a box. This served as a feed box for the chickens. After a short conversation, it was agreed that the owner would bring this feed box to the antique shop the next day and that it would be examined by Mr. Ewerhart. The exact modalities of the sale are not known, but in any case the virginal found its way from the chicken coop into the collection and was restored by Bernhard von Tucher in 1987.
