In this video, Heimler walks you through what you need to know about the Articles of Confederation, which is a required foundational document for AP Government.

Basically, the Articles of Confederation was the first Constitution of the United States. Since it was established right on the heels of American independence, the Articles provided for a government that was as far from centralized tyranny as they could manage. Therefore, the Articles of Confederation reserved most governing power for the states.

The federal government had very little power and only had one branch: the legislative (or Congress). Ultimately, many problems would confront this document and provide the occasion for a new Constitution in 1787.
