Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (FHA) Represents a Survival Mechanism. The brain (specifically the hypothalamus) can suppress the reproductive axis in response to significant physiological or psychological stress, excessive exercise, or low energy availability. It's essentially the body deciding conditions aren't optimal for pregnancy. This involves reduced pulsatile secretion of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH).
