Last year, we got the Exynos 2100 chip by Samsung, and it was hyped a lot by the brand since it offered significant upgrades over the predecessor. Samsung sent out the invites for the launch by mentioning that “Exynos is back,” and everyone thought that finally, Samsung has a chip that can perform similar to Qualcomm’s best chip. But well, when the chip was put against the likes of Snapdragon 888, we got to know that this time as well, Exynos chip was not as good as Snapdragon 888. It throttled earlier than the 888 and even drew more power than the 888. The GPU was also not as powerful as the Adreno 660 of Snapdragon 888.

Today, Samsung launched its new flagship chip named the Exynos 2200, and once again, the company is claiming some big upgrades.Perhaps the biggest highlight of this chip is its GPU. The GPU is named the Samsung Xclipse 920, and it is the fruit of Samsung and AMD’s partnership. It is an RDNA-2 based GPU and if you do not know what RDNA is, then let us tell you that it is the name of AMD’s current GPU architecture. Samsung says that for the first time on mobile devices, we are getting features such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS), something that we have seen only on PCs, consoles, and laptops.

To enhance the overall performance as well as efficiency, there is a technology named AMIGO or Advanced multi-IP Governor.

The Exynos 2100 has last year had the Mali-G78 GPU, so compared to that, we are pretty sure the Xclipse 920 performs way better.

Speaking of the GPU, Exynos 2200 comes with the same 1+3+4 core arrangement as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. So, there is one prime Cortex-X2 core, three performance-based Cortex-A710 cores, and four efficiency-focused Cortex-A510 cores. Now Samsung did not reveal the clock speeds, so we cannot say whether they are similar to what Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 offers or not.

Samsung says that the NPU or the Neural Processing Unit of the Exynos 2200 is also upgraded, so it now offers twice the performance as the predecessor. The modem is the ‘3GPP Release 16’ that supports sub-6GHZ and mmWave spectrum bands. The company says this modem can boost speeds up to 10Gbps by using 5G NR and 4G LTE signals.

The ISP or the Image Signal Processor supports up to 200 Megapixel camera sensors, and at 30fps, this ISP supports up to 108MP in single camera mode or 64MP + 36MP in dual camera mode. Up to 4K HDR and 8K video recordings are also supported.

Exynos 2200 supports up to 4K 120Hz or 2K 144Hz HDR10+ displays, LPDDR5 RAM, and UFS 3.1 storage. And last but not least, it is built on Samsung’s 4nm manufacturing process. In terms of power efficiency, we know that so far, TSMC has had the lead over Samsung. So, only the real-world tests will reveal whether Samsung has the upper hand this time or not.

We will get the first phones powered by Exynos 2200 soon, in the form of the Galaxy S22 series by Samsung.
