The award-winning Museum of Cannock Chase is unfortunately closing its doors for the last time in April 2025.
With very kind permission, we were allowed to film this piece of history that will be gone forever in the coming weeks.
The rich history and past coal mining heritage in and around Cannock Chase,
is an era that will live on in the memories of past generations.
The award-winning Museum of Cannock Chase is a great day out for the whole family. Located in the site of the former Valley Colliery, which became a mining training centre, the museum is gateway to the Hednesford Hills Nature Reserve and the ideal starting point for a visit to Cannock Chase. Whether you are interested in coal mining, want a hands-on experience of the history of toys, fancy reminiscing about Gran’s front room or want to find out about the history of Cannock Chase, there is something for everyone in the permanent galleries. There’s also lots for families including quizzes and interactive exhibits, plus a packed events and temporary exhibition programme throughout the year. Enjoy a cake and a cuppa in the coffee shop, or bring a picnic, and browse the gift shop. You can also find out what else there is to do around Cannock Chase from the Tourist Information Point.
The Mines Rescue Station
The Mines Rescue Station was originally based in nearby Victoria Street but
moved here in 1972, where it remained until the service was relocated out of
the district in 1991. In 1997 the building became a public house, but was later
pulled down after most of it was destroyed in a fire started by vandals.
The Winding Wheel and Mine Car
The winding wheel outside the museum is from Lea Hall Colliery in Rugeley, which closed in 1990. When at the colliery, the wheel was unused and was left in place to give the headframe a balanced appearance. It is one of three remaining winding wheels from the Cannock Chase coalfield.
The mine car at the front of the Museum is from Littleton Colliery, in Huntington. It was used to transport coal from underground to the pit surface, where it was emptied onto conveyor belts.
