SEA CASTLE
Sidon is a city along on the Mediterranean coast - 45kms south of the capital of Beirut
Sidon is said to have been inhabited since 4000 B.C. and was the most powerful city-state of ancient Phoenicia
The Sidon sea castle was built in the 1300 by the crusaders to defend the holy lands. Its is a fortress on a small island connected to the mainland by a 80m long roadway. After bearing several wars and partial destruction by the Mamluks when they took over the city from the Crusaders The city was eventually conquered by the Arabs and then by the Ottoman Turks. Sidon is now an important port city in modern day Lebanon, however , the sea castle today is in ruins.

SOUKS
Sidon's old souk is a traditional Arabic souk dating back to the Phoenician era .

SOAP
In a 13th century stone building is a soap making workshop originally built by the Hammoud family in the mid 18th century. The soap factory operated for over 300 years until its closure in 1975 due to the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War. It is now a museum.

TYRE
Tyre is located on the southern Mediterranean coast. The site here has been occupied since the Bronze Age.Tyre was once a great Phoenician city that reigned over the seas from 20th century BC. Tyre founded many prosperous colonies during this time, such as the North African city of Carthage in 9th century BC. The city fell to Persian rule in 572 BCE, before being conquered by Alexander the Great in 332 BC after a 7 month siege.
Tyre was then ruled by Egypt during the ptolemaic dynasty before being conquered by the Roman Empire. The crusaders then conquered and held Tyre until the city was captured and destroyed by the Muslim Mamlūks in 1291.
This site is now a Unesco world heritage site.
