Wales’s landscape used to be forested, so our rivers used to be naturally abundant with large woody material. Now, most of rivers have fewer trees and less dead wood.
Large woody material plays a crucial role in the health of our rivers. It creates different flows and a variety of habitats. It cleans gravels and creates shelter for fish and other animals, improving the habitat for wildlife.
Large wood, in the right place, can slow the flow of water during heavy rainfall. A river that contains more wood also traps silt to improve water quality and helps the river behave more naturally.
We are working with landowners to increase the amount of wood in our river channels in the right place. This will help our rivers cope better with the effects of climate change.
