Stephen Cummins delivers some opening remarks and talks remote as a Service and the rise of the 100% remote worker SaaS companies. SaaS is already obliterating so much on-premise enterprise software. Will it help disrupt on-premise people in traditional shared offices too? Can 100% remote companies, with great culture and cutting-edge remote methodologies, produce optimal levels of employee and customer success?
A modest, but growing fleet of 100% remote companies like Hotjar, YouCanBook.Me, Basecamp (for project management), Zapier (for iPaaS), Balsamiq (for wireframing) etc are quietly landing on the shores of our business landscape. 100% Remote SaaS companies only win if they focus hugely on Employee success. The model demands it. The employees can live wherever they want and remote companies can afford to reward them generously by hiring outside expensive locations like San Franscisco & London. And the 100% remote movement does not ascribe to Jason Lemkin’s pinned tweet exhorting people to work 100 hours a week. Hiring in non-expensive places allows companies to reward employees generously. 100% remote companies are often bootstrapped & sacrifice hyper growth for slower, more sustainable growth. I doubt there will be a 100% remote company as big as a Salesforce or even a Workday or a ServiceNow within 5 years – it probably happens later. But there’s room for thousands of SaaS companies to succeed. Not just a few dozen. These companies can massively improve the lives of their employees – not just make them wealthy working long hours. That’s good news for all of us.
