The Waler is a hardy and versatile Australian horse breed known for its strength, endurance, and resilience. Originally bred for military use, the Waler gained fame as a cavalry horse, especially during World War I, and is still admired today for its reliability and stamina in various equestrian disciplines.
The Waler's origins trace back to the early 19th century in Australia, where horses of diverse breeds—such as Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Timor Ponies, and Cape Horses—were crossed to produce a strong working animal suited to harsh conditions. The breed earned its name from being exported from New South Wales (then often referred to as "New South Wales horses" or "Walers") to serve in the British cavalry. Walers were highly valued in the Boer War and World War I, known for their ability to withstand extreme climates and carry heavy loads. Although the breed declined after the wars, preservation efforts have kept its legacy alive.
