Large-scale Assessments of Soil Health in Brazil: the Soil Bio Approach
Ieda Mendes (EMBRAPA - Cerrados) presents the "soil bioanalysis" technology, which integrates the biological component into routine physical-chemical analyses already conducted by Brazilian commercial laboratories. The Soil Bio Approach is based on the measurement of two enzymes (arylsulfatase and beta-glucosidase) and operates as a "blood test" that allows for the diagnosis, and even anticipation, of soil health challenges. The higher the activity of these enzymes, the healthier and more productive the soil is.
According to Mendes, since July 2020, EMBRAPA has already trained 33 laboratories in the new technology and produced 28 thousand analyses. At a maximum cost of USD 36 per complete analysis, the Soil Bio is already available in 990 Brazilian municipalities (17% of the total). From this database, it can be estimated that 67% of Brazilian soils under agricultural use are healthy or recovering, 24% are sick, and 2.5% are diseased. The reference values of the technology are calibrated for crops cultivated in the Cerrado and Southern regions, but with expansion forecasted for more crops, such as sugarcane and coffee in 2024.
