The Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction is a famous example of an oscillating chemical reaction that exhibits oscillations in color and pattern due to complex redox reactions.
Procedure:
Solution 1: Dissolve 5 g of potassium bromate in 68 mL of distilled water. After complete dissolution, gradually add 2 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid.
Solution 2: Dissolve 1 g of malonic acid in 10 mL of distilled water.
Solution 3: Dissolve 1 g of sodium bromide in 10 mL of distilled water.
Measure 20 mL of solution 1 and transfer it into a 100 mL beaker. Add 4 mL of solution 2 followed by 2 mL of solution 3. The solution will initially turn yellow. Allow the yellow color to completely fade, then add 5 drops of ferroin solution ([Fe(phen)₃]²⁺, where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). Pour the prepared mixture into a petri dish to observe the oscillations in color and pattern. As the reaction progresses, the solution will cycle through red, blue, and colorless phases. Leaving the solution undisturbed may result in the formation of spiral waves and other dynamic patterns.
