The Mérida Centro Zoo is completely free — and that alone makes it different from almost every zoo in America.
Located in the heart of downtown Mérida, Mexico, this historic city zoo has been operating for over 100 years. Families ride the one-peso train, kids run through shaded paths, and iguanas roam freely like they own the place.
But there’s another side to the story.
Some of the animal enclosures are smaller than what you’d typically see in U.S. zoos, which raises bigger questions about public access, funding, and animal welfare.
