Some of the finest sides by the California Ramblers are the ones made when Red Nichols was a member of the band in mid-1925. Between Red’s coming into his own stylistically, and the Ramblers cutting edge and hotsy totsy sound, everything the band churned out during this time is great. Here is the first volume of 12 sides made during Red’s tenure with the band, including classic versions of “Charleston,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Everybody Loves My Baby,” and “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby.” Look out for Red’s incredible breaks on the Pathe recording of “Just a Little Drink” at 2:37, the Paramount recording of “Cheatin’ On Me” at 5:54 and the Cameo recording of “Charleston at 21:02. Also dig the hip flute solo on “Just a Little Drink” at 1:59.
