ASSELBY: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #8 of 172

Описание: Sometimes TVI goes to a place expecting to see a few things that are obvious, but in fact ends up with way more than he bargained for. That is certainly true of this place. Consisting of a main village that's only around 300 people big and two tiny hamlets, you would think there isn't much to see or discover in a parish of it's size. Wrong.


In fact, this one had be delving deep into the internet to find things out which my curiosity would not leave alone. For example, when you've seen a property with the name "Eel Hall" which has a depiction of cavorting eels on the front of it, you mind wanders! This village has a history of eel harvesting, thanks to a former fisheries that was around in the time of the Norman invasion


Not only eels, this one has a history of growing soft fruit, it used to have a a railway line and two chapels, and not to mention the tiny hamlet of Knedlington once had a fountain that legend would have us believe now forms part of the foundations for the M62 which passes close by. That fact is overshadowed somewhat by the gorgeous Knedlington Hall and the land that it's associated with.


There's more. In Booth, this even smaller hamlet is the reason why a lot of the East Riding bears the name of Boothferry, including the old district council, and the former stadium of Hull City FC. For a tiny part of the East Riding, there's quite simply a LOT to get your teeth into here, and all of this is before we've even considered the standout feature just over the border into Howden. (which I believe shouldn't even be in Howden, but that's just me!) the stunning Boothferry Bridge.
